Background
The study area, present-day Estonia, covers approximately 45,000 km². Although human occupation may have been possible before the Last Glacial Maximum, no evidence has yet been discovered. Following the retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet around 11,000 years ago, the first inhabitants arrived in the region. These pioneer hunter-gatherers were associated with Eastern Hunter-Gatherer ancestry and derived from both Central European and eastern populations. Throughout the Stone Age, the genetic composition and material culture of local communities changed repeatedly, reflecting shifts in population dynamics, technology, subsistence practices, and social networks.
Settlement patterns
Settlement locations, mobility, and subsistence practices were closely adapted to local environmental conditions and resource availability. During the Early Mesolithic, people occupied small camps along inland rivers and lakes as well as coastal areas. From around 9,000 years ago, forager groups expanded into the Baltic Sea islands, extending their seasonal mobility and resource networks. By approximately 7,000 BP, more permanent settlements had developed both inland and, on the islands, as indicated by the appearance of sunken-floor and semi-subterranean houses. These dwellings suggest repeated occupation of favourable locations. Throughout the Mesolithic, inland and island communities developed distinct subsistence strategies and material cultures reflecting adaptation to different environments.
Lifeways and material culture
Stone Age communities practised hunting, fishing, gathering, and the production of tools from stone, bone, and antler. Zooarchaeological evidence indicates the exploitation of a wide range of species, with elk, beaver, aurochs, and wild boar among the principal game animals, while seal hunting was particularly important in coastal and island regions.
Stone tool production was largely organised at the household or community level. Flint was the primary raw material, although local sources were limited and often of poor quality, leading to the import of higher-quality flint through exchange networks. Quartz and Baltic Sea red quartz porphyry were also widely used, especially in coastal areas. Pottery appeared around 7,200 BP with the emergence of Narva Ware. The earliest vessels were conical and tempered with organic material and crushed shell. Closely related to ceramic traditions east and southeast of Estonia, Narva Ware was adopted by hunter-gatherer communities and represents one of the earliest pottery traditions in Northern Europe.
Around 5,900 BP, the Combed Ware Culture introduced a new pottery style and substantial changes in material culture. Long-distance contacts had existed throughout the Mesolithic, but their scale intensified markedly during this period, as reflected by the circulation of amber, flint, and green slate. The emergence of Combed Ware coincided with the arrival of populations linked to the Volga region, although cultural change likely resulted from interaction and integration rather than replacement. A remarkably uniform material culture spread across much of northeastern Europe, influencing settlement patterns, burial customs, and ritual practices.
Around 4,800 BP, a new population associated with the introduction of farming arrived in present-day Estonia. For at least the next millennium, farming communities and hunter-gatherers coexisted in the eastern Baltic, maintaining largely distinct ways of life and cultural traditions.
Mortuary practices
The earliest known burials in Estonia date to the Mesolithic and include both single and multiple interments. Throughout the Stone Age, mortuary practices were diverse, and only a small proportion of the population appears to have received archaeologically visible burial. Most known graves are inhumations, with bodies placed in varied positions and sometimes accompanied by grave goods. Burials occur within settlements, in cemeteries, and in isolated locations along movement routes. These practices suggest the immediate treatment of the dead, a focus on the physical body, and the absence of a clear separation between the domains of the living and the dead.
The FORAGER project
FORAGER investigates the Pottery Mesolithic (7,200–5,900 BP) and Neolithic (5,900–3,750 BP) of the Eastern Baltic, a period when the region was inhabited by hunter-fisher-gatherer societies. These communities were often sedentary, shared many cultural traditions, maintained extensive exchange networks, and developed distinct burial practices, technologies, and dietary adaptations. While the people of Narva culture were related, the project focuses on nine key archaeological sites in Estonia – Narva Joaoru, Kõnnu, Tooma, Tamula, Naakamägi, Akali, Kääpa, Valma, and Sindi-Lodja – to explore how people adapted to environmental change and how their societies transformed over time. By combining the study of more than 400 pottery vessels, technological traditions, settlement catchments, and resource management strategies, FORAGER will investigate patterns of cultural diversification, resilience, and loss.
A major component of the project is the high-resolution isotopic analysis of around 100 individuals, providing direct evidence of dietary change through time. In addition, limited targeted fieldwork at the Tooma burial site (ca. 6,500 BP) will help address important gaps in our knowledge.
