My research interest focuses primarily on the application and development of quantitative methods in archaeology, particularly Bayesian and generative (simulation-based) inference. I apply these techniques to tackle a variety of research themes, including the reconstruction of prehistoric population dynamics, the diffusion of technological innovations, the origin and diffusion of wealth inequality, changes in settlement patterns, and dynamics of cultural transmission within and between groups. I have explored these themes in a variety of regional contexts across the globe, from the diffusion of agriculture in prehistoric Japan to the diffusion of ceramic technology in the Saharan Africa. I am particularly interested in larger works of synthesis based on systematic analyses of legacy datasets as well as cross-cultural comparative studies. In the FORAGER project, I will be leading Work-Package 1 (Demographic Reconstruction) and the Japanese case study.
