I am a PhD student supervised by Jessica Hendy and Ester Oras focusing on the proteomic (amelogenin) sexing and zooarchaeology of deer species in the Eastern Baltic region. My PhD will adapt the technique of proteomic sex estimation, using the protein amelogenin, for use on deer species, on which the technique has not been applied previously. I will then utilise proteomic sex estimations alongside traditional zooarchaeological techniques, such as metrical assessments and aging from tooth wear, to hunter-gather sites in the Eastern Baltic, particularly Estonia. By combining zooarchaeological and proteomic information I hope to help answer questions about human-animal-environment interactions, especially those related to food procurement and hunting strategies.
